Areas covered with woods are a priceless capital of Karlovac County. You may truly relax taking a walk in the shadow of centennial trees and along river plateaus, and from spring till autumn you may also pick mushrooms, chestnuts and other fruits from the woods. Mountains are rich in various animals, among which big game is the most distinguished. Woods and hunting-grounds are run by Hrvatske šume (Croatian Forests) and local hunting clubs, which had mostly been named after animals that have their habitat in those regions.
Their task is also to take care of animals, above all of endangered ones, as well as to protect natural habitat which those animals inhabit. Thanks to such an ecological approach, in Karlovac County you may still see animals that are pretty rare in Europe, such as wolfs, lynxes and bears, which are connected with numerous local legends and hunter's tales. These proud rulers of the mountain kingdom are signs of more and more present ecological tourism; inner peace and satisfaction are objectives of "hunting" in preserved habitats of genuine beauty and harmony.
Brown bear, wolf and lynx inhabit the south-western areas of the county, in the area of Mala and Velika Kapela, and they belong to the most important participants of biological diversity of that area. Hunting of those species is under strict surveillance and its purpose is preservation of present population and numerousness which provides for their ability to survive and co-exist with humans. Wolf and lynx are also protected animal species. County is also rich in other game: foxes, deers, hares, wild hogs, ducks, quails, pheasants, partridges, pigeons...
New generations are getting more aware and more attracted to a type of hunting in which you use cameras. Karlovac County was the first one in Croatia to offer photo safari as a tourist service; on hunting grounds Crni and Debeli vrh at Kapela or at fallow deer farm near Krnjak you may take single or group photographs or record videos of various game. Patiently waiting for an animal to appear in front of your lens, you will not be only rewarded with an excellent photo, but you will be rewarded with an unforgettable experience of observing magnificent animals in their natural habitats.
